Krefeld, May 15, 2020

Boxon receives the award in the category “Social Benefit”

Boxon has just been announced the winner of the PackTheFuture Award by the jury of the 2020 edition. Out of a total of 58 entries, Boxon’s rPET Big Bag, which is made from used PET bottles in Indonesia, receives the award in the category “Social benefit”. This category honors “an innovation that meets the new consumption trends and habits of today’s users and customers, or the new consumption modes of target groups such as children, the elderly and families. It can also include a benefit to society.”

The PackTheFuture Award is based on an initiative of ELIPSO ‐ The French Plastic and Flexible Packaging Association and IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen e.V. – The German Plastics Packaging Association. The competition took place for the fifth time this year. Out of 58 entries, 14 were nominated for the short list this year, and 10 concepts received the prestigious prize.

All winning submissions are presented in the “Innovation Book” which is available on the official award’s website. The award ceremony will take place on November 24th, 2020 at the packaging fair ALL4PACK in Paris. The original date 12.5.2020 as part of the Interpack in Düsseldorf had to be postponed due to the Corona crisis.

It is an important recognition that shows that the packaging sector, which has a very specific responsibility towards environment, can create new sustainable packaging solutions and perspectives for a better future through innovation and commitment. For this reason, Boxon promotes the sustainability dialogue within and beyond the packaging industry – be it with customers, suppliers or own employees.

The rPET system: How a used plastic bottle becomes a Big Bag

The award-winning product is a big bag made entirely from recycled PET. The PET bottles used for this purpose are collected in Indonesia in public buildings such as schools or organizations before they are delivered to the recycling plant. Since the used bottles are collected directly after use, they are of good quality. The re-use for big bag production prevents marine pollution as the bottles do not end up as litter in the oceans. Overall, the R-PET Big Bags have several positive effects on the environment:

● Avoidance of marine pollution

● Effective re-use of PET bottles

● Less use of resources

● Up to 25% less CO2emissions

● PET can be recycled and processed several times without loss of properties

All steps from sorting and cleaning the bottles, through processing to the production of the big bags, take place in the same system: This means short ways, no need for transport and or additional packaging. About 25 bottles of 1.5 l each are processed for 1 kg of woven recycling PET. An average 2 kg Big Bag is made from around 50 recycled PET bottles.
